September Leader Meeting Notes

Thanks to everyone who showed up for the September in-person leader meeting in Fort Pierce!  We were able to share some Sweets and Treats samples, hand out some early bird patches, update folks on upcoming events, and answer a few questions!  And we only dropped a couple of patches into the orchestra pit!

UPCOMING EVENTS!

Here’s What’s Happening…

One of Gemini’s annual community service activities is our Salvation Army Stocking Drive.  Each year participating troops collect stocking and fill them with age appropriate toys and gifts for families that the Salvation Army serves.

This year, we need to gauge interest in participation and we’d like to know how many stockings we can commit to filling.  If your troop is interested in participating in the Stocking Drive, please click the button below to submit an interest form and let us know how many stockings you would like.

CSA Weekend Planning Meeting – Oct 26

Calling all Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors!

CSA Weekend is December 12 – 13 at Camp Nocatee.  We need your help to plan another amazing weekend at camp.

Our first planning meeting will be on Sunday, October 26 at 5:30pm at Panera in St Lucie West

Archery Training – Oct 4

GSSEF is offering a one-day adult archery training course at Camp Welaka on October 4.  Participants will receive a level 1 USA Archery instructor certification, which is required to use the archery ranges at Welaka and Nocatee.  The course requires online coursework completed at home prior to the practical training and examination on Oct 4.  For more information click the button below.

Canoe Training – Oct 11 – 12

Maybe the most fun adult training weekend offered by GSSEF, canoe training will give adult leaders the skills they need to safely lead their troop in canoeing at camp.  One canoe trained leader is required to use the canoes and kayaks at Welaka and Nocatee.  It’s a really fun weekend jumping out of perfectly good boats and learning how to first property navigate in a canoe, and then how to rescue others when they need help!  More info at the button below.

Girl Crew Jumpstart – Oct 11 – 12

While the adults are jumping out of perfectly good boats, CSAs can develop their leadership skills and receive training to assist with activities at council programs.

Info at the button below!

Hatchet Throwing Training – Oct 25

What’s more fun than handing a bunch of middle schoolers edged weapons and encouraging them to let fly?

Picking up a hatchet and doing it yourself!  At this adult training day you’ll learn how properly care for, hold, and throw hatchets and tomahawks, and how to safely run a hatchet range.  This training is required to use the hatchet throwing range at Nocatee.  (And it’s fun!)

Pumpkin Chunkin – Nov 2

Troop 40038 will again offer up this opportunity to help support Creature Safe Place right after Halloween.  We collect donated leftover uncut pumpkins and process them into storage-friendly and animal-bite-sized pieces for Winnie Burns at CreatureSafePlace to use as winter animal feed and a natural de-wormer.

If you’d like to help out, mark this one on your calendar.  Time and location are being worked out so stay tuned.  The event will be all day, but folks can drop-in and drop-out as needed.  We’ll need both girls who can handle sharp implements and knives safely, as well as younger girls to help scoop out pumpkin guts!

DBJ – Math In Nature – Nov 8

Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors!  Come earn your Math In Nature badge in a one-day activity at Camp Hidden Hammock on November 8!

Registration will open Oct 1, so in the meantime mark your calendars!

Honoring our Veterans – Nov 11

We expect Texas Roadhouse to request our support again this year for Veteran’s Day on Nov 11.  Show up and greet our local veterans as they come for their meal at Texas Roadhouse.  Before the day, you and your troop can make thank you cards and either hand them out on the day, or send them to be handed out by other troop members if your troop cannot attend on the day.

Friendsgiving – Nov 18

Troop 42040 and 42050 cordially invite everyone to their Friendsgiving Feast on Nov 18 at the Moose Lodge in Port St Lucie.

We <3 Welaka – Dec 7

It’s not on the GSSEF calendar yet, but a recent email from council set the date of We <3 Welaka as Dec 7.  More info will come, but if you are interested in this one, mark your calendars!

Gemini Potluck Holiday Party – Dec 9

Some times we just need to get together, eat too much sugar, play silly games, and enjoy each other’s company.  You are all invited to our annual leader holiday party on December 9 at the Disabled American Veteran’s hall in Port St Lucie.

Food, fun, an ornament exchange, and a guaranteed good time for everyone!

Wreaths Across America – December 13

If your troop would like to participate in wreath-laying at Rolling Oaks Cemetery as part of Wreaths Across America, mark your calendars for December 13.  Girl Scouts should be prepared to conduct themselves well as this is a solemn event.

Troop Camp Training – Feb 28, March 14-15

Troop Camp Training is a required course for leaders who want to take their troop camping: either as a troop or as part of a service unit camporee such as our annual Ingathering.  Camp training is probably the second most important adult training to receive, after CPR / First Aid.  This year’s TCT session is going to be in late February and mid-March, which bumps right up against our Ingathering dates.  If your troop is getting their TCT trained volunteer at this session, please let us know as we begin planning Ingathering, so that we can work to integrate that into our planning.

Camp training is not yet on the GSSEF activity calendar, so for now mark your own calendars and stay tuned, no magic button yet.

Gemini Ingathering – March 27 – 29

Hey!  No fancy graphic for this one?

Right, because we don’t have a theme yet… and that’s where you (your girls) come in!  We’re currently looking for theme ideas to present at our first Ingathering planning meeting.  If you(r girls) are interested in helping shape an awesome camporee this year, collect their thematic inspiration and sent it Melanie’s way!

October Leader Meeting – Oct 6

Phew!  That was a long one – I started writing this one about three hours ago and boy are my fingers tired!  (No generative AI assistance was used in the crafting of this email.)  If you stuck it out here to the bitter end, thank you.  I appreciate you taking the time to read it.

Next time, online!  Our next leader meeting will be the first Monday of October – October 6 – on Zoom!  Magic button, do your stuff!
