April Leader Meeting Notes

Troop Activity Spotlight

Ingathering 2023 is fresh on everyone’s minds, and by all accounts was a good time had by all! A service unit weekend camoree at Camp Welaka, this adventure included canoeing, swimming at the pool, tie dying, crafts, a presentation on coyotes by Florida Fish and Wildlife, and ended with an inspiring Scout’s Own on Sunday morning reminding us of the strength we share when we share our strength.

Updates from Council

Early Bird Registration is due on Tuesday, April 4! If you re-register your troop by the end of Tuesday, 100% of girls renewed plus two leaders, you qualify for a $0.15 per box increase in your returns from cookie sales in the 2024 season, plus $50 in re-registration credit which will be deposited to your troop bank account.

We are only six new members away from our 2022-2023 member year recruitment goal! In that same vein, let’s celebrate and welcome troop 42323, a new Daisy/Brownie troop of 10 and troop 60200 which is adding 3 more girls to make a troop of 6!

Upcoming Events

Feeding Florida Together – April 1 – 30

GSSEF Think Like an Engineer Journey-in-a-Day April 15

Join us, in Boca Raton, as the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida travel to a galaxy far, far away to complete this year’s Journey in a Day: Think Like an Engineer! During our one-day Journey, Girl Scouts will dig deeper into the engineering galaxy and use skills gained along the way to help make a difference in their community. We will learn all about the design process and test out how engineers use design thinking to solve real world problems.

Earth Day 2023, Oxbow Eco Center, April 22

The St. Lucie Earth Day Festival highlights unique eco-art, sustainable living ideas and community resources. Admission is free! Over 70 local organizations and businesses will be showcased and share hands-on activities throughout the gardens and trails of the preserve. Meet local environmental groups, health professionals, law enforcement, foresters, gardeners, beekeepers and more. Discover why there’s “No Place Like Home”, our Earth, through interactive experiences in a fun, festival atmosphere.

Christi Matthews and Kristin Skarie will have a recruitment booth at the event, and we need your help running it!

We are looking for volunteers, adults and girls, to help run the booth in two hour blocks:
9-11
11-1
1-3
3-5

This is a great volunteer opportunity, and we will be signing off on school volunteer hours if you need them. Contact Christi Matthews at [email protected] to volunteer

Raingutter Regatta – Camp Welaka – April 22

During our Rain Gutter Regatta program at Camp Welaka, Girl Scouts will explore boating safety including how to prepare for a boat trip, how to navigate a boat, and other boating rules, build their own mini sailboat, and then race their boats down the Rain Gutter Regatta!

Open to Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors

Fish Like A Girl Scout – Jupiter – April 29

Inspired by the “Run Like A Girl” video, we know that we can do lots of things “like a girl.” Girls will learn fishing basics, including knot tying, tackle, and casting. Other topics covered are conservation, regulations, and fish identification. And, of course, we will be fishing!!!

Rock the Noc – Camp Nocatee – April 29

Rock the Noc is back after being rescheduled due to the hurricane this past fall! Bring the whole crew and jam out with us at GSSEF’s 2nd annual outdoor festival. We are celebrating music, art, and self-expression at Camp Nocatee and it’s going to be a rocking good time. Not only will you and your family get to explore all the reasons we love to camp (including archery, slingshots, hiking, and campfires), but there will be a live band at Founders Hall, an open mic poetry jam session, music-themed crafts, and more!

Keep Your Ear To The Ground

There are a few happenings that are still being developed, that you should keep a weather eye on in the upcoming weeks:

Clothing Swap / Upcycle Fashion Show

Troop 40813 is working on a June event to promote using resources wisely and keeping useful clothing out of the waste system by hosting a clothing swap / fashion upcycle / fashion show event some time in June.

Camp Welaka First Aid Supply Drive

One thing we discovered at Ingathering is that the first aid kits at the event sites at camp Welaka were understocked / missing important supplies.

Troop 40210 is taking the lead and identifying the needs at each campsite, and will soon after be hosting a supply drive to get those kits restocked in time for resident camp season!

Leader Recognition Dinner

Mark May 16 on your calendar for the 2023 Gemini Leader Recognition dinner. Come celebrate our volunteers with us!
